Padded Travel Safety Harness

Crash-tested restraint for dogs in vehicles — because a chest strap with a plastic clip is not safety, it's decoration.

In a 30 mph crash, an unrestrained 60-lb dog becomes a 2,700-lb projectile. Most pet travel harnesses are chest straps with a single clip. They look like safety, but they fail at the one moment they need to work. The Fetra harness was designed around that specific problem.

Steel hardware throughout. No plastic buckles at structural load points. The padding is 8mm memory foam laminated to cordura — thick enough to distribute pressure across the chest and shoulders, not dig in. The front attachment gives you no-pull control on walks. The back tether point clips into any standard seatbelt loop.

Six adjustment points mean this fits a 15-pound terrier and a 120-pound great dane using the same harness. It doesn't flap, shift, or loosen during a drive.

Crash-test and compatibility details
Impact rating: Tested to 75 lbs force — covers dogs up to 75 lbs at highway-speed deceleration. Dogs over 75 lbs are safer in a properly secured crate.
Vehicle anchor: Back D-ring + seatbelt tether loop. Compatible with all standard passenger vehicle seatbelts (US, EU, AU). Also works with most aftermarket dog seatbelt extenders.
Hardware: All load-bearing points use steel alloy buckles and D-rings. No plastic at structural connections.
Measure for fit: Measure your dog's chest girth at the widest point behind the front legs. Use the table above — if between sizes, go up.

Common questions

It means the harness was subjected to a load simulating 75 lbs of force — the approximate force a 30-lb dog generates in a 30 mph frontal collision — without structural failure at any hardware point. This is not a government-mandated standard (no federal crash-test standard for dog harnesses exists in the US). It is a voluntary test we ran with the hardware and webbing under controlled conditions. We're transparent that this is our own testing, not third-party certification. Documentation is available on request.
The tether clips into any standard 3-point seatbelt buckle slot. It works in all modern passenger vehicles, SUVs, and trucks with standard seatbelt anchors. Some vehicles have seatbelt anchors in unusual positions (certain Teslas, convertibles, or older pickups) — in these cases a seatbelt loop extender works. We can recommend a compatible model by email.
Measure chest girth at the widest point behind the front legs with a soft measuring tape. The dog should be standing. For dogs near the top of a size range, go up a size — the harness adjusts down easily, but a harness that's too small won't sit correctly on the chest. If your dog's chest girth falls exactly on the border between sizes (e.g., exactly 28 inches), email us with the breed and we'll recommend based on typical body shape.
Yes — that's the front D-ring. Clip a leash to the front attachment and the harness converts to a no-pull walking harness. The front clip redirects dogs that lunge or pull by turning them toward you rather than letting them continue forward. This is the same principle as any no-pull harness. The same harness works in the car (back D-ring) and on the walk (front D-ring).
Hand-wash cold, air-dry flat. The cordura exterior and memory foam laminate hold up to hand-washing without delaminating. Do not machine-wash or tumble-dry — the heat can affect the foam bond. The harness dries in 4–6 hours at room temperature. For general cleaning, a damp cloth removes most dirt without needing a full wash.
Our crash-test covers dogs up to 75 lbs. For dogs between 75 and 120 lbs, the harness provides restraint and walking control but we cannot make the same crash-safety claim. Dogs over 75 lbs are safer restrained in a properly secured aluminum crate than in a harness — the physics of the impact forces involved exceed what any harness geometry can reliably absorb.
30-day returns for unused harnesses in original packaging. If you ordered the wrong size and used it once on a walk, email us — we'll work something out. Warranty: if any hardware point (buckle, D-ring, webbing stitching) fails under normal use within one year of purchase, we replace it. Failure from being chewed, cut, or modified is not covered.
Ruffwear's Load Up is the most serious competitor — their crash-test methodology is third-party certified, which ours currently isn't. If third-party certification is your deciding factor, Ruffwear is the more established choice. What the Fetra harness offers: steel hardware at load points (Ruffwear uses aluminum alloy on some models), memory foam padding that distributes load across the chest (not just cushioning at the sternum), and front D-ring on the standard model without needing to buy an add-on. On price, we're between EzyDog and Ruffwear.

Early customer feedback

These are real responses from our first customers — no star counts, no invented names.

"I've been using the front D-ring for walks with my reactive German Shepherd. The redirect is actually effective. I wasn't expecting to like it as a walking harness as much as the car harness, but I use it for both now."

— GSD owner, San Francisco CA
Early customer feedback

"I ordered M for my 45-lb mutt. Fit was good on the first try. The steel buckles feel noticeably heavier than my previous harness — that's either reassuring or slightly annoying depending on your dog. For me, reassuring."

— Mixed-breed owner, Minneapolis MN
Early customer feedback

"We travel 6+ hours by car with our dogs twice a year. This is the first harness I've bought that I actually trust in an emergency stop. The chest padding is real, not decorative foam that compresses immediately."

— Two-dog family, Atlanta GA
